Section: 404
Everything you'll need to know on how to setup your 404 page.
The 404 page is shown to visitors who reach a URL that doesn't exist on your store — typo'd a link, followed an outdated bookmark, or arrived from a deleted product. A well-designed 404 keeps them on your site instead of leaving. The Cartiafy 404 page includes a friendly message, a search bar to recover, and links back to popular pages.
Where to find this section
The 404 page is a system template that automatically shows when a visitor reaches an invalid URL. You don't add it manually — it's already in place.
1) In the theme editor, switch to the 404 page template using the page selector at the top.
2) Click on the 404 section in the left sidebar to open its settings.
3) Configure the color scheme. The visible content (heading, message, search) is pulled from the theme's translation files.
General settings
Color scheme
Select the color scheme for the 404 page. You can pick from any of the schemes set up in Theme Settings → Colors. Controls the page background, heading, body text, and button colors.
Frequently asked questions
How do I customize the 404 message?
The text on the 404 page (heading, body, button labels) comes from your theme's translation files. To customize, go to Online Store → Themes → ⋯ → Edit default theme content and search for 404. Edit the values to match your brand's tone.
Can I add other sections to the 404 page?
Yes — like other templates, you can add additional sections to the 404 page (e.g. Featured Collection, Newsletter signup) to give visitors more ways to recover. Use Add section in the left sidebar while viewing the 404 template.
How do I test the 404 page?
Visit any URL on your store that doesn't exist (e.g. yourstore.com/this-does-not-exist). The 404 page will render automatically. The theme editor also lets you preview it directly via the page selector.
Why is the 404 page important for SEO and Theme Store?
A friendly 404 page reduces bounce rates and recovers traffic that would otherwise be lost. The Shopify Theme Store also requires a 404 page in every theme — it's part of the submission criteria. The Cartiafy 404 is provided pre-built so you don't need to build one from scratch.
Can I add a search bar that searches my products?
The default 404 already includes a search input that submits to your store's search results page. This means visitors can immediately type what they were looking for and find it via Shopify's product search — no extra setup required.
