Search
Everything you'll need to know on how to setup your Search section.
The Search section powers the search results page of your store (e.g. yourstore.com/search). It includes the search input, filter tabs (Products / Articles / Pages), the results grid, pagination, and a no-results state with optional search suggestions. Built-in JSON-LD structured data is automatically generated for SEO.
Where to find this section
Unlike home page sections, the Search section is a system section — it comes pre-installed on the search results template. You don't need to add it manually; it appears automatically when a visitor performs a search on your store.
1) In the theme editor, switch from the home page to the Search results template using the page selector at the top.
2) Click on the Search section in the left sidebar.
3) Use the right sidebar to configure the section. All settings are explained below.
General Settings
Color scheme
Select the color scheme for the search page. You can pick from any of the schemes set up in Theme Settings → Colors. Controls the page background, heading, search input, filter tabs, and result card colors.
Results per page
Number of results shown per page before pagination kicks in. Choose between 12, 24, 36, or 48. The default 24 strikes a good balance between page length and load speed.
Search Form
Description
Optional search page description shown below the page heading. For example: Find products, articles, and information across our store. Leave empty to hide.
Result Cards
Show article/page excerpt
Tick this box to display a short preview text on article and page result cards. Useful when you have descriptive excerpts that help visitors decide which result to click.
Show article date
Tick this box to show the publish date on article result cards. Helps visitors gauge how recent the content is.
Image position
Where the image sits inside each result card: Top, Bottom, Left, or Right. Top is the most common — produces a vertical card layout. Left or Right give a horizontal card layout that's compact and dense.
Image border radius
Round the corners of card images, between 0 px and 24 px. Default 0. Set a non-zero value for a softer modern look.
Suggestions (No Results)
The settings below appear on the empty state when a search returns no results. Suggestions help visitors recover by clicking on a popular search term instead of leaving.
Show search suggestions
Tick this box to show clickable suggestion pills when a search returns no results. Default: on.
Suggestion 1
First suggestion pill text. For example: shoes, summer collection, or shipping. Each suggestion runs a new search when clicked.
Suggestion 2
Second suggestion pill text. Leave empty to hide this suggestion.
Suggestion 3
Third suggestion pill text. Leave empty to hide this suggestion.
Badge Settings
The settings below control the discount and product badges shown on product result cards.
Badge style
Choose between horizontal badges or diagonal ribbon style. Pick Normal - Pill badge for a rounded horizontal pill, or Ticker - Diagonal corner ribbon for an angled ribbon across the corner.
Discount format
How to display the savings amount. Money format uses your shop's currency automatically. Percentage shows SAVE 25%. Money shows SAVE $30.00 (uses shop currency).
Badge type
What to show when product has both discount and special tag. Discount Only — show savings/discounts. Tag Only — show product labels (NEW, HOT, etc.). Both — show discount + tag (if available).
Badge position
Position of the badge on product images: Top Left or Top Right. Top Left is the most common convention in e-commerce.
Frequently asked questions
How can I test the search page in the theme editor?
The theme editor only previews the search page when a real search has been performed. Open your storefront in a new tab, type a query in the search bar, then go back to the editor and switch to the Search results template — the results from your last search will be displayed for preview.
What's the difference between filter tabs and result types?
The filter tabs (All / Products / Articles / Pages) let visitors narrow the results to a specific content type. By default, All is selected and shows mixed results. Each filter is a separate URL — no JavaScript needed.
Can I customize the no-results message?
The no-results message text comes from the theme's translation files (search.page.no_results). To customize, edit the value in Online Store → Themes → Edit default theme content. The suggestion pills below the message can be customized with the three Suggestion fields in this section.
Why are some products not appearing in search results?
Shopify's search engine looks at product title, description, vendor, type, and tags. If a product isn't appearing, check that those fields contain the search term. Products tagged with gift-wrap are intentionally hidden from results.
Does the search page support SEO?
Yes. The section automatically emits JSON-LD structured data (SearchResultsPage schema) for the first 10 results. This helps search engines understand the content of the page and can produce rich results in Google.
